Why is balance important?
Good balance helps with everyday activities such as standing, walking, turning, reaching and changing positions.
Balance can be affected by weakness, reduced mobility, neurological conditions, vision problems, medications and other factors.
Examples of balance training
Depending on the person’s ability, a physiotherapist may prescribe exercises involving:
- Supported standing
- Weight shifting
- Sit-to-stand practice
- Walking exercises
- Turning practice
- Lower-limb strengthening
- Functional balance activities
Safety comes first
Older adults with poor balance should not perform challenging balance exercises alone. Exercises should be performed in a safe environment and progressed appropriately.
How can physiotherapy help?
A physiotherapist can assess balance and identify appropriate exercises based on the individual’s functional abilities.
Frequently asked questions
Can balance improve with exercise?
Many people can improve aspects of balance and functional mobility through appropriate training, although results vary.
Should older adults exercise alone?
